Inside: Put together a Valentine’s Day circle time color matching activity that is fun for toddlers and young preschoolers! We work a lot on color recognition in our two’s class throughout the school year, especially during circle time. For our Valentine’s Day theme I created a color matching activity using props from our Simple Rainbow Props Pack. This activity got each of the children engaged as we first recognized all of the colors and then, one by one, they matched their own heart to the one on the board. It’s simple and short, perfect for shorter attention spans!   See more Valentine’s Day circle time activities in this video!

Valentine’s Day Circle Time Color Matching Activity

Supplies

Felt board or magnetic board (or you can use the floor) Hearts and labels from our Simple Rainbow Props Pack Laminator  Laminating Sheets Self-Adhesive Magnetic Pieces or Velcro, (If you are using a board.)

Preparation

Make one set of rainbow word labels and one set of colored hearts. Then, make additional copies of the colored hearts so that each child has one. Note: For younger children, use less colors, not the entire set. Laminate (if desired) and cut the pieces out. If using a magnetic or flannel board, attach appropriate pieces on the backs so that they will stick to the boards.

Note: Each of our classrooms has a portable magnetic white board, and this is what I like to use because it’s spacious. But you can use a smaller magnetic board with the pieces being closer together, or placed in rows, or a felt board.

Set Up

Place color labels on the board or on the carpet. Note: For younger children, use less colors, not the entire set. Have the hearts ready to pass out to the children.

The Activity

Hand each child a color heart. Point to each color label that is on the board (or on the carpet) and have the children join you in calling out each color. Invite each child, one by one, to come up and place their heart under or next to each matching color label.

Activity Two: Matching Labeled Color Hearts

For this activity, you will only need the labeled hearts that are also in our Simple Rainbow Props Pack. Make enough copies so that there is a full set on the carpet (or you can use a board, like above) and a heart for each child. Valentines Color Matching Circle Time Activity Each child will place their heart underneath the matching one.

Extension

Vary how many of each color there are. When finished, invite the children to help you count how many hearts each color has. What color has the least? What color has the most?
