I probably embraced the splatters because I was more drawn to the children’s excitement as the spring whisks moved up and down. They loved it! We love process art, especially with the toddler class. You might recall when we painted with balls, pressed collage pieces onto foil, and even used our blocks for painting! The reason we love it? You don’t need to give lengthy directions and there is no specific desired outcome. And … my favorite part … there is hardly any prep involved. So when I grabbed some kitchen utensils and paint, I sat back and watched how our toddlers used them for lots of motion while mixing the colors. Over and over again! If you are looking for an easy toddler process art idea, this is it! Setting It Up

We used two trays, squirting paint in them and adding utensils. As the children started stamping on the big sheet, we handed them their own single sheet. Notice that we pulled the chairs away from the work area, too. Since toddlers love to move, they often prefer walking up to the art table, standing while painting rather than sitting. I modeled how to dip the utensil into the paint and stamp it onto the paper. Our toddlers picked up the motion quickly! We probably could have put a bit less paint on that particular tray, too. Fortunately we aren’t shy when it comes to messes at the art table. Yep, a bit messy and lots of fun!
