During our St. Patrick’s Day theme, we love to add some color mixing to show how blue and yellow make green. I created a super simple St. Patrick’s Day toddler art activity that shows what happens when we mix those colors. Using the classic “fold over” technique you probably did as a kid. I created a printable that you can find towards the end of this post, to make this St. Patrick’s Day toddler art even simpler!
St. Patrick’s Day Toddler Art
What we used: Blue tempera paint Yellow tempera paint St. Patrick’s Day printable (scroll down to find the link) Putting this activity together: Make one copy for each child who will be doing this activity. Place some blue paint on the left leaves, and yellow paint on the right leaves, as shown below.
How to Do this St. Patrick’s Day Toddler Art
I pre-folded the printables so it would be easier for the children to fold them again. Show the children how there are 2 colors on the paper and have them name the colors. Instruct them to press on the paper and then rub back and forth. When they are finished, tell them to open their paper. As they open their printable, they will notice how the colors mixed. Ask them what colors they see. Remind them that when they started, there were only 2 colors. How many colors are on the paper now? Allow to dry thoroughly. You can leave it as is, or cut the shamrock out and glue it on a solid piece of paper. Preschoolers with good fine motor skills can try cutting their own shamrocks out!
