The Activity

 

Preparing this Activity

Print one copy of all ten bunnies as the set that will be on the board. Then, print enough copies of the numbered bunnies so that each child has one (or two, if you have a small class). You will want to make sure you have at least one of each numbered bunny. Cut out each bunny and laminate, if desired.

Felt or Magnetic Board … or Floor

The main set of numbered bunnies will need to be displayed on a felt or magnetic board, or on the floor of your circle time area. You will want space for the additional bunnies that the children will place underneath them. Felt board: Use velcro on the back of each bunny. Be mindful of the hook and loop so that they will stick to the felt board. Magnetic board: Use self-adhesive magnetic dots on the back of each bunny. Each of our classrooms has a portable magnetic white board, and this is what I like to use because it’s spacious. But you can use a smaller magnetic board with the pieces being closer together, or placed in rows. Floor: You won’t need to put anything on the backs of the bunnies since they will be lying flat on the floor, in the middle of your circle time area. With my 2 and young 3 year olds, I put 1-5 bunnies on the board. The 3 and 4 year olds put all 10 bunnies on the board. You can decide where you feel your children are at and place however many you wish on the board. If you do all ten bunnies, keep in mind that you will need more space. You can either do this horizontally or vertically. If space is an issue, I recommend using the floor. After handing each child a numbered bunny, invite them to count with you the bunnies that are on the board or on the floor. Step 2: Match the Numbers on the Bunnies Tell your students that they each have a bunny with a number on it, and when it’s their turn, they will come up and match their bunny to the bunny with the same number, placing their bunny underneath it. I always like to start first so that I can model how it’s done. Then, I start with the first child on my right and move on from there until each child has a turn.   As each child comes up, invite the children to call out the number that is on that child’s bunny. When finished, notice how many you have of each number.
