The kids are home from school. It’s only day two and already they are bickering, needing something to do, that’s preferably screen-free. I’ve got you covered! Here is my favorite collection of easy and fun ideas that you can put together for your kids over winter break. They will also work with babysitters, grandparents, and child care centers! Get the materials ready ahead of time and you are ready when the first “I have nothing to do” is said.

Paint

Paint on ice! Or, if you want to add a holiday twist, paint on gingerbread ice or Christmas tree ice! Grab a freezer bag and invite your children to create (mess-free) painting. Paint with your children’s Lego toys – so fun! Squeeze watercolors onto paper towels and strengthen those fingers. Make some frozen sparkly paint! It can stay in the freezer until the kids are ready to paint. Do your kids love cars? Drive them through paint! Did you get some bubble wrap in your Christmas packages? Paint a snowman with it! Stamp paint using citrus fruit. (Rhythms of Play)

Yarn

Do you have paint samples stashed in drawers? Cut them into shapes for yarn wrapping. Make a necklace (and work those fine motor skills at the same time). Paint with yarn for some fun process art! (Buggy and Buddy) Weave items through cardboard circles. (The Artful Parent)

Glue

Have fun with glue, salt and watercolors for some raised painting. Glue cotton balls on to paper. (School Time Snippets) Squeeze bottles of colorful glue. (Teach Preschool)

Markers

Draw on a white board. Use markers on paper towels, add water, and watch what happens. (Learn With Play At Home) Tape markers to the backs of toy cars and push them across paper. (Messy Little Monster)

Contact Paper

Stick small pieces onto contact paper, similar to what we did with tissue paper pieces. Have fun with a snowman sticky wall. (Happy Toddler Playtime) Press yarn onto Contact Paper. (Hello, Wonderful)

Tape

Peel tape and press on to paper to make pictures. (Hands On As We Grow) Go outside and create some sidewalk chalk paint resist art. (Coffee Cups and Crayons)
