During our gardening camp, I decided to invite the children to make nature stick necklaces. I love to use natural materials and was inspired by a similar activity I found floating around Pinterest. I wanted to add a bit more, so I decided to add some fine motor by threading dyed macaroni pieces. What a fun activity this turned out to be!

What you will need:

short sticks (a bit over an inch or longer – whatever you prefer) tempera paint dyed macaroni (or beads) yarn

I gathered sticks from around our building and cut them into 1.5 –  2 inches.

I then invited the children to paint them.

 How to assemble:

I placed the dyed macaroni on a plate.

And gave them a choice of what yarn color they wanted.

Now for the fine motor part.

The children counted out 3 macaroni pieces and threaded them onto the stick.

They picked out what color yarn they wanted and I tied it at the ends of each side of the stick, double-knotting it. (Note: for extra security you could add some glue between the yarn and the stick.)

Adjust the yarn to desired length.

    They loved wearing these!
