A nice addition to your winter theme! This year I decided to make it a goal to do more cooking with our 2 and 3 year olds. I have good intentions every year, and start out strong, but tend to fizzle. This year my co-teacher and I chose to alternate putting together a cooking activity every other Thursday. We are almost halfway through the school year. So far, so good! For our winter theme, I chose to have our children make snowflake sugar cookies. I found an easy packaged mix that allowed us to complete the entire process in a short amount of time. Easy Snowflake Sugar Cookies with Kids
Normally I like to cook from scratch, such as when we made our pumpkin muffins. But because we were adding an extra step (rolling out the dough and using cookie cutters), I needed to cut a few corners. I picked up a package of sugar cookie mix and followed the recipe on the package. Once again, we used my Kitchen Aide stand mixer because it worked so well with previous cooking activities. However, a hand mixer will work fine, too.
We poured the mix into a bowl and had the children take turns scooping and dumping it into the mixing bowl. We added the egg and butter and turned the mixer on, watching everything blend. Always a highlight with this age group!
It was then time to roll the dough and press a snowflake cookie cutter into it. Each child took a turn and then we put them in the oven to bake while we moved on to another activity.
When the cookies came out of the oven, we let them cool and then I squeezed some white icing on top of each one. I handed one cookie to each child along with a craft stick. I prefer using craft sticks over plastic knives because I know they will go into the mouth. It’s inevitable.
Then it was time to spoon the sprinkles on top. I gave each child their own small cup of sprinkles to spoon onto their cookies.
And then, it was time to eat!
