One of our favorite color mixing books is Little Blue and Little Yellow. Every time we read it, I like to include some sort of hands on preschool color mixing activity. You might recall when we mixed blue and yellow paint using paper tubes. This time I wanted an independent activity that could be at our science table. I also added some other pieces complimented the activity nicely. And all hands-on, of course!

Blue and Yellow Finger paint Gallon size plastic sealable bag Tray to tape everything on What I added for more fun:

I propped open a book that shared some green items. I created a visual using blue, yellow, and green markers on paper. I added a blue, a yellow, and a green block.

That was the best idea ever, because finger paint is more translucent than tempera paint, so you can really see the colors mixing. Plus, it has a different texture and feels thicker when you press on the bag. I made sure to tape the bag to the tray using wide tape so that little fingers wouldn’t be curious and try to open it.

They took the blocks and placed them on top of each color. More color recognition going on! They loved using their index fingers to make lines and curves on the bag, noticing the green appearing.

And then, true to what 2 year olds do, more blocks ended up on the table. Hello red block! Where did you come from?

It was later moved to our writing table. Having it taped on a tray made it very portable, and it could be stored for future use.
