During our apple theme I put together an apple color sorting activity that also works fine motor skills. Preschoolers (and older toddlers!) love using bug tongs to pick up the apples and place them into the matching bowls! Watch the video:
What to do? Create a color sorting activity! We’ve done this with real apples, later having taste tests. But for this particular activity I decided to use our fake apples that worked well with bug tongs. I grabbed matching bowls from our collection of sorting bowls and the children loved transferring the apples!
Preschool Apple Color Sorting Activity
Supplies
Red, yellow and green sorting cards (I used the cards from our Apple Orchard Packet) Red, yellow and green sorting bowls Red, yellow and green apples (I used this set.) Tongs Basket
Place the following on the table:
Red, yellow and green apples in a basket or some sort of container Red, yellow and green sorting bowls displayed across the table Tongs (I now have red, yellow and green tongs in my set, so I matched them with the bowls.) Red, yellow and green labeled cards
The Activity
Show the children how there are red, yellow and green apples and red, yellow and green bowls.
When done, pour them all back into the basket!
You can add an apple picking tree to your dramatic play area, as we did in our apple orchard dramatic play activity. More information: Apple Orchard Dramatic Play Circle Time Activity
Place the sorting bowls and color cards in the middle of the circle time area. Hand each child a fake apple. As you call on each child, have them tell you what color their apple is and then they will place it in the matching color bowl. When everyone has had a turn, count how many apples are in each bowl.
