Watch: My Secret to a Successful Circle Time Circle time with young children can be a challenge. I not only this from experience, but it’s a topic in many messages and emails sent by my readers. It took me many years to realize that the key is getting them involved. Not just listening to you, but actually being part of the activity! This flower matching activity encourages young children to identify and match colors while holding props. It’s also a perfect addition to the gardening theme!
Preparing this Activity
Print one copy of each labeled tulip and print enough copies of the non-labeled tulips so each child has one, plus one for you. Laminate and cut around each tulip. Tape the non-labeled tulips to craft sticks.
Felt or Magnetic Board … or Floor
The set of labeled tulips will need to be displayed on a felt or magnetic board, or on the floor of your circle time area. These are the tulips the children will be tapping with their own tulips. Felt board: Use velcro on the back of each labeled tulip. Be mindful of the hook and loop so that they will stick to the felt board. Magnetic board: Use self-adhesive magnetic dots on the back of each labeled tulip.
Floor: You won’t need to put anything on the backs of the bunnies since they will be lying flat on the floor, in the middle of your circle time area.
The Activity
During circle time, introduce each color to the children. As you touch each one, have them tell you what color it is. Then, pass out the handled flower props. I like to start first so I can model how the activity is done. Each child, when it’s their turn, will share what color tulip they have and find the matching colored tulip on the board (or floor). They will then tap that tulip.
I keep a container next to the board so the children can drop their flower prop into it after tapping.
Keep going until each child has had a turn. Watch: Our Favorite Spring Circle Time Activities
Place five flowers on a board and sing Five Little Flowers by The Kiboomers Five Spring Flowers Have five of the flowers ready to go. Turn on the song 5 Spring Flowers by Rachel Coleman and place the flowers on the board, one at a time, as the song directs, until all five are on the board. Then, remove the flowers one by one as the song counts down to one.
