We spent some time simply rearranging the flowers, working on our fine motor skills. Simple ways to add counting to your preschooler’s day are the best, aren’t they? If you agree, you’ll love this flower counting activity. If you’ve been reading my blog for awhile, you will recognize a similar counting activity we did during small groups. And yes, those are the very same silk flowers. I had leftovers in our spring theme storage box that were just waiting to be used! This flower counting activity works well independently. Now that I think of it, this needs to be added to our math tray collection! It would be an easy one to set up at the kitchen table, for those of you doing math at home. Teachers are busy enough as it is. We don’t need to spend extra time putting together elaborate activities. Whenever possible, I try to use what we already have and make sure assembly is easy. Note: If you want to eliminate the drying part, use a hot glue gun instead. I set the materials at our independent work table and modeled how to poke the sticks into the foam. I asked them to put 2 flowers on the block. Then 3. Then 4. I went as high as they could go. Instead of saying the number, I placed a number in front of the foam block, inviting number recognition to this activity. For some of the preschoolers, this was much more challenging, especially when I did not go in numerical order. For younger children, simply play with them by poking them in playdough. Help your child count as she’s adding them or removing them from the playdough. Here is my Privacy Policy
