Inside: Creating a farm theme in our toddler and preschool classroom was easy, as there are so many fun activities. Come see how we set up each of our learning centers! We chose to have a farm animals theme because many of our toddlers and preschoolers visit the farm in October, when our local farms are busy with pumpkin events. The highlights included painting pigs with golf balls, dressing up as cowboys and cowgirls, and using our farm finger puppets when singing Old MacDonald Had a Farm. Each of our learning centers invited the children to explore and learn with playful activities. 👉 Scroll down towards the end of this post to find free printables you can use during your farm animal theme!

Creating a Farm Theme in the Toddler and Preschool Classroom

Light Table

We displayed our Nesting and Sorting Barns activity on the light table. This was a fun way to work on recognizing numbers 1-6, matching the numbered animals to the numbered barns.

Sensory Bin

We put corn kernels into our sensory bin and added small farm animals, tractors, and scoops.

Dramatic Play

We added cowboy hats, vests, and animal headbands to our dramatic play area, along with our Grill and Serve BBQ Set.

Block Center

Our wooden farm and horse stable were set on our train table, along with some tractors and farm animals.

Science and Exploration

I made some farm animal sensory bottles, each one with a different animal. I also placed some farm puzzles at this table and displayed our farm picture cards (available for you to download towards the end of this post).

Art

Our 2 year olds love to keep on moving, so we did some action art using golf balls and the pig printable (see below). See the activity here: Golf Ball Painted Pigs

Circle Time

I used my Old MacDonald Had a Farm finger puppets while we sang the song. Our 2 year olds loved this visual! Books we read:

Music and Movement

Our music playlist includes songs specific to our October themes, as well as other favorites:

Flannel Board

I put our farm felt pieces on our flannel board for independent play.

Table Activities

During our free-choice centers time, we place puzzles and other activities on our big table. Included in this photo is our farm sound blocks, assorted farm puzzles, and some of our farm printable activities that are available for you to download below.
