Every year our toddlers and preschoolers make ornaments for their families. And because the theme is handmade, they make their own gift bags and cards to go with it. I love that every part of the gift is made by the child and I’m pretty sure the recipients do, too. This year I came up with a bright and cheerful Christmas card that involved putting “lights” on the tree and then gluing the tree onto a folded piece of paper. The children loved the process, and I love how they turned out!
Small felt circles Green construction paper Assorted colors of construction paper (9 x 12) White glue Preparing this toddler Christmas card: Cut a tree from the green paper that will fit on the card. Fold the 9 x 12 piece of construction paper in half.
Place the tree, glue, and felt circles on a tray.
I told the children that their trees needed lights, and that they were going to put them on the tree. This is a great way to work on fine motor skills as their small fingers pick up each circle, dropping and then pressing it onto the tree.
As the children were selecting each circle to press into the glue, I asked what color they had. Soon, they were all telling me what colors circles they had. (I love this hands-on way of reinforcing skills!)
After letting the tree thoroughly dry, we glued it onto the folded pieces of construction paper and added a small tan rectangle to the bottom for the trunk. I then let the children decorate the insides of their cards using markers and signed their names.
Don’t they look festive hanging in the window of our building’s hallway?
Outline the tree in pen and invite them to cut it out. This is a fun way to work on scissor skills! When decorating the inside of the card, let them write their own names.
